Organic clothes

After organic foods, the hot new buzzword in green-speak is ‘organic clothes.’ In other words, if you are so inclined, you may now not only think, talk and eat green—you may wear it too. A leading maker of organic clothing is called Do U Speak Green (DUSG). The DUSG is on to something good: making money the ethical way armed with a full range of ready-to-wear clothes bearing the carbon footprint mark from SGS, a world-leading company in the business of inspection, testing, verification and certification.

So, what exactly is organic clothing? Simply put, it is clothes made of materials grown in compliance with organic agricultural standards. Which implies that the cotton, jute, silk, ramie, or wool used to make the fabrics are sourced from farms which do not use any synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically-modified seeds. Organic clothes for this reason cost more but yield significant environmental benefits. Since the process eschews the use of any pesticides and herbicides no toxic chemical can even accidentally escape into the environment. This is a huge plus particularly with respect to cotton, the world’s most widely grown and worn fabric.

Research has shown that though cotton covers just 2.5 per cent of the world's cultivated land, it devours 16 per cent of the world's insecticides, more than any other single major crop. Organic clothes ensure that humans and animals are not exposed to pesticides or herbicides and once discarded harmful chemicals do not creep into landfills, polluting future crops and food chains.

The Organic Trade Association notes that the sales of organic cotton clothing and household textiles increased 35 per cent between 2008 and 2009. The reason why organic clothes have captured the imagination of shoppers is, as the National Geographic puts it, such clothes make shoppers “feel right, not just for your skin, but also for your conscience.”

Experts opine that the benefits of organically grown textile crops, extend way beyond your closet and contribute significantly to protecting our ecosystem and its biologically diverse life.

Open Letter to  Education  Minister

Dear Editor,

Through this columns I would like to bring to the kind attention of Education Minister that due to ongoing pen down strike by AASATA and ATA the poor students who studies at govt. schools are being victimized. That as you know that in the remote far flung areas of Arunachal Pradesh most of the schools are run by SSA teacher. You remaining silence over the present scenario of schools due to pen down strike are not the symbol of responsible minister in state.  Education is the back bone of society, which every Minister, MLAs and high profile leaders acknowledges in public forum.

But when school is not running and teachers non-performing fighting for their genuine cause why state govt. is silent?  It clearly indicates that our govt. is not worried about the future of those poor students, who is studying in govt. schools as they are not born from rich families to get schooling at private schools.

As a concerned ministers, you should have initiated some vital ideas to end the fiasco with nation building teachers so that “saamp bi mare lathi bi na tuthe”. But it is noticed that minister is not saying a single words regarding the issue of ATA and AASATA pen down strike at any public meeting or any press conference. So, as citizen of Arunachal Pradesh I would like to appeal concerned minister and concerned authorities of education department to early initiate steps to solve the issue. Poor student studying at govt. schools need proper care as CBSE and AISSCE exam-2013 is also knocking at the door of students.

Yours’

Nabam Akin Hina

Please look into demands of SSA

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw your kind attention towards the silent mood of government, student unions and other association towards ongoing pen down strike called by teachers. Why government is not responding towards the demand of teachers. Teachers demand is genuine.  Government in the past had an agreement with SSA teachers for regularization of their job. Striking teachers didn’t have their two month salary. But on the other hand student unions of state is maintaining total silent over the issue. The very objectives of students union is to work for the interest of the students of state. Due to ongoing strike the school going student is facing serious problem. I request state govt to sort out the demand of the teachers early by an amicable solution.

Yours’
